A non-profit called Health in Harmony HIH is asking farmers to hand in their chainsaws in return for money and a chance to set up an alternative livelihood. Borneo is divided between Indonesia Malaysia and Brunei and it is estimated that up to 10 of its land is taken up by industrial palm oil and logging operations. But deforestation isn’t just about large-scale tree clearance; some of those behind the logging are small-scale farmers cutting trees as a sideline to make ends meet. Buyback and healthcare HIH launched its chainsaw buyback scheme in 2017 under the group’s Indonesian name Alam Sehat Lestari ASRI. Farmers who illegally log and sell the wood to timber companies are given around 200 for their chainsaws as well as up to 450 in financial support for them to set up an alternative sustainable livelihood such as opening a shop organic farming and even beekeeping. The scheme also involves addressing the root causes of the problem. According to HIH many of the farmers who turn to logging do so because they need the money for basics like healthcare. “They live far from the healthcare clinics and they see logging as a place where they can get quick cash” explained Mahardika “Dika” Putra conservation program manager at HIH. “If they need this amount of money they cut this amount of trees. “We asked what solutions they think they need to live in harmony with the forest and they said ‘high quality affordable healthcare and training in organic farming.’”

Plenty of components are at play in the quest for a happier life but the key comes down to one main factor: quality relationships. “What we found was that the important thing was to stay actively connected to at least a few people because we all need a sense of connection to somebody as we go through life” Waldinger told CNN Chief Medical Correspondent Dr. Sanjay Gupta recently on his podcast Chasing Life. “And the people who were connected to other people lived longer and stayed physically healthier than the people who were more isolated” he said. “That was the surprise in our study: not that people were happier but that they lived longer.”

A new study that recreates the circumstances during which Kepler made his drawings appeared on July 25 in The Astrophysical Journal Letters. “Kepler contributed many historical benchmarks in astronomy and physics in the 17th century leaving his legacy even in the space age” said lead study author Hisashi Hayakawa assistant professor at Nagoya University’s Institute for Space-Earth Environmental Research in a statement. “Here we add to that by showing that Kepler’s sunspot records predate the existing telescopic sunspot records from 1610 by several years. His sunspot sketches serve as a testament to his scientific acumen and perseverance in the face of technological constraints.” The sun’s tumultuous activity The sun experiences an 11-year cycle of waxing and waning activity known as the solar cycle. Currently scientists believe that the sun is reaching or nearing solar maximum the annual peak of its activity for the current solar cycle called Solar Cycle 25. Solar maximum is typically associated with an increase in the number of sunspots visible on the sun’s surface. These dark regions some of which can reach the size of Earth or larger are driven by the sun’s strong and constantly shifting magnetic fields. Today scientists track solar activity using data from ground and space-based observatories magnetic maps of the solar surface and ultraviolet observations of the sun’s outer atmosphere.

GARM confirmed it is still planning to defend itself in court. This is an important acknowledgement and a necessary step in the right direction. I am hopeful that it means ecosystem-wide reform is coming” Yaccarino posted on X Thursday. Human brain samples collected at autopsy in early 2024 contained more tiny shards of plastic than samples collected eight years prior according to a preprint posted online in May. A preprint is a study which has not yet been peer-reviewed and published in a journal. “The concentrations we saw in the brain tissue of normal individuals who had an average age of around 45 or 50 years old were 4800 micrograms per gram or 0.5 by weight” said lead study author Matthew Campen a regents’ professor of pharmaceutical sciences at the University of New Mexico in Albuquerque. “Compared to autopsy brain samples from 2016 that’s about 50 higher” Campen said. “That would mean that our brains today are 99.5 brain and the rest is plastic.” That increase however only shows exposure and does not provide information about brain damage said Phoebe Stapleton an associate professor of pharmacology and toxicology at Rutgers University in Piscataway New Jersey who was not involved in the preprint. “It is unclear if in life these particles are fluid entering and leaving the brain or if they collect in neurological tissues and promote disease” she said in an email. “Further research is needed to understand how the particles may be interacting with the cells and if this has a toxicological consequence.” The brain samples contained 7 to 30 more tiny shards of plastic than samples from the cadavers’ kidneys and liver according to the preprint. “Studies have found these plastics in the human heart the great blood vessels the lungs the liver the testes the gastrointestinal tract and the placenta” said pediatrician and biology professor Dr. Philip Landrigan director of the Program for Global Public Health and the Common Good and the Global Observatory on Planetary Health at Boston College. “It’s important not to scare the hell out of people because the science in this space is still evolving and nobody in the year 2024 is going to live without plastic” said Landrigan who was not involved with the preprint.
