5 Killer Mistakes – Part 2

Posted by vernonsimpson on February 24, 2013

In the last post we covered the first two of the 5 biggest mistakes you can make in dealing with big fish clients. Today we’ll cover the third and fourth ones: Taking on More Than You Can Handle and becoming over dependent on any one.

When you take on too much, your business can’t keep up and therefore you can easily lose control of everything and find yourself barely functioning. You want your business to be successful, no doubt, but you need to have a plan for how you will handle the growth. Your clients expect great customer service and highly quality products/services; they don’t know or care about your behind the scenes operations to get those things done.

Look for these signs that you are taking on more than you can handle:

• Clients’ needs aren’t being met.
• Employee morale is low, clients are upset and you’re in a panic.
• You have to react in emergency mode to save accounts.
• Your current clients are suffering from trying to keep up with new business.
• Profits are going down.
• You are just trying to pick up the pieces of your business.
• Your clients/customers leave.
• Resources are being reallocated.

There a trick called the Mock Fish Plan. This plan can help you react positively when you are facing some or all of these things and help you get your business back on track. This plan will:

• Help increase sales in a short period of time.
• Alter your products/services for the better.
• Fulfill promises you made to your clients.

There are six steps to this plan:

1. Bring in your best team and have them all help to meet the fish needs.
2. Review your operational system.
3. Anticipate future problems better.
4. Communicate better.
5. Include costs in your quotes.
6. Always have a back-up plan.

You can allow your company to become dependent on any one fish. Eventually or for certain periods there is going to be a slowing down period with your fish. In order to stay in the game you need to diversify.

If you’ve ever mishandled a fish, you could drive away potential fish as well. In order to keep balance and prepare for a strong future, there are a few things you can do.

These things include:

• Stay in the loop and try to know what’s going on inside your fish company.
• Constantly reinvent yourself and stay at the top of your industry.
• Stay exclusive.
• Try to secure multi-year commitments and contracts.
• Spread your contracts out.
• Price your products/services correctly.

You also need to work to reduce your dependency on your fish. This can generally be measures in sales or profits. Take a look back at the process we’ve used thus far to snag more fish to keep this all in balance.

These are the ways you can help avoid the killer mistakes that can make you lose it all. If you need help with any of these tips or tricks, try our FREE test drive to get the help you need fast.

Next week we’ll talk about the last of the killer mistakes and how to combat it from hitting your business hard.

Until the next time.

Oct 20 (Reuters) – U.S. cigarette maker Altria Group Inc said on Wednesday industry
peer Philip Morris International Inc has agreed to pay $2.7 billion for the exclusive right to sell IQOS heated tobacco products in the United States.

IQOS is a smokeless tobacco heating device that was developed by Philip Morris and sold in the United States by Altria until the U.S.
trade regulator banned the import and sale of the product last year following
patent claims from rival R.J. Reynolds.

Philip Morris is looking to

overturn the ban

.

Altria, which sells cigarette brands like Marlboro in the United States, was
spun off from Philip Morris International in 2008 when the company wanted to separate its
U.S. and overseas businesses.

Altria said one of its subsidiaries had an option to extend the IQOS contract until April 2029 after it had reached certain milestones.

However, Philip Morris disagreed with Altria’s position.

“The parties were unable to reach a long-term agreement and decided to enter into the Agreement to transition and ultimately conclude their relationship,” Altria said in a statement.

Philip Morris, which reports quarterly results later on Thursday,
aims to resume supply of IQOS products in the United States by the first half
of 2023.

Altria still holds the rights to sell IQOS in the United States until May 2024, after
which it transitions to Philip Morris.

“We are ready to invest behind IQOS to bring it to market at scale across the U.S.,” Philip Morris Chief Executive Officer Jacek
Olczak said.

Altria said it has already received $1 billion from Philip Morris
and will receive the remainder by July 2023.

Separately, Philip Morris

raised its buyout offer

for Swedish Match AB in a last-ditch effort to get shareholder support for its $16
billion move into the fast-growing market for cigarettes alternatives.

March 24 (Reuters) – Marlboro maker Philip Morris International Inc is
working on options to exit the Russian market, citing a complex and
rapidly changing regulatory and operating environment in the country following
its invasion of Ukraine.

The company, which garnered around 6% its net revenue
from Russia in 2021, said on Thursday it has discontinued sale of several cigarette products and canceled all product launches for the year in Russia.

It has also canceled plans to make over 20 billion TEREA
sticks, heated tobacco units intended for use with its IQOS ILUMA devices, as well as related
investment of $150 million.

Earlier this month, Philip Morris had suspended its
planned investments and decided to scale down manufacturing operations in the
country.

Rival Imperial Brands too has started talks to transfer its Russian business to a local third party, joining BAT in exiting the sanction-hit country.

The clock is ticking louder than the one on the
popular daytime TV programme Countdown – my mother-in-law can’t get enough of it.
It keeps her brain ticking over, she claims.

Tick-tock: you have 21 days to use your tax-friendly Individual Savings Account allowance for
this tax year before it is swept away, never to be seen again.

And, tick tock, there are 22 days until the great
pensions revolution starts – when you will have the opportunity at long last to seize control
of your pot.

‘Spousal benefits’: Provided the annuitant was younger than 75 when they died, any widow’s pension built into
the annuity would be tax-free from April 6

Bar a few provisos and a lot of expected administrative incompetence on behalf of pension providers,
you should be able to cash in your pension, if you desire, or a chunk of it, provided you’re prepared to
pay tax on any amount above your right to tax-free cash.

More importantly, some pension company wielding a corporate sledgehammer won’t bludgeon you into exchanging
your retirement fund for a lifetime income through the purchase of an annuity.

Pension freedom – triumph or disaster in the making?

How to… The three big pension freedom changes you need to know about

Share

The pensions revolution is exciting and empowering. It’s also not without its dangers – be they unexpected tax bills on withdrawals or fraudsters
determined to walk off with most of the fund you
have accumulated over your working life.

And, unfortunately, as with many financial overhauls in the past that required new
legislation (think State pension and the raising of the retirement age for women), there are always some unintentional losers.

New rules create indiscriminate lines in the
sand. Fall on the wrong side and you lose out.

One such loser is Helena Brown, a feisty 68-year-old widow
from Halesowen in the West Midlands, who I have spent much time
talking to over the past week. Without wishing to be insensitive, she
loses out in the great pensions revolution because her husband,
David, died a week ‘too early’.

As a result, she is unable to take advantage of
the more favourable tax treatment of pension pots and annuities on death that are a key component of the pensions overhaul post April 5.

The idea behind these pension changes, as Standard
Life’s Jamie Jenkins puts it quite nicely, is to enable pensions to ‘cascade down the generations’ by reducing
or removing the yoke of taxation. But not in Helena’s case.

David, a successful businessman in his time, died on November 25 last year after a short battle with Parkinson’s disease.

He was aged 70. Helena and David had been married 44
years and had never taken more than two weeks’ holiday at any one time because
of their commitment to the engineering company that David ran with his brother.

In its heyday the Wednesbury-based business employed about 200
people and Helena was the human resources manager.

When David died, he left two pension annuities that under their terms provided Helena with
a reduced widow’s pension.

But when Helena began to gather the paperwork after David’s funeral to receive
the payments, George Osborne delivered his Autumn Statement (December 3).
This announced a radical change in the taxation of ‘spousal
benefits’ payable from an annuity.

Provided the annuitant was younger than 75 when they died, any widow’s pension built into the annuity would be tax-free from April 6.
Helena, quite understandably, wanted to know whether such
a change would apply to her. So she sought advice from The Pensions Advisory Service.
It told her that, provided she did not take her first ‘spousal’ payment until April
6, her payments would be tax-free.

Sadly, this appears not to be the case. Legislation being drafted to embrace
the changes stipulates that tax-free spousal benefits apply only to ‘first payments
made on or after April 6 relating to deaths on or after
the date of the announcement – December 3′.

In other words, if David had died just over a week later, Helena would now be looking forward to a tax-free widow’s pension from both of David’s annuities.
Instead, she will be taxed on the income.

Of course, nothing and no one can replace David in Helena’s life, but it seems
awfully cruel that having lost the person she loved with a passion, she discovers
that, because he died on November 25 rather than December 3, she is excluded from
a crucial pensioner tax break.

On this day of all days (Mother’s Day – Helena is one), it
would be lovely if some mandarin lurking in the offices of Revenue & Customs made it their duty to ensure
the draft legislation was amended. All it would take is for the December 3 cut-off to be removed with
tax freedom applying to spousal benefits where the first payment kicks in on – or after – April 6.

Have a heart.

Sept 28 (Reuters) – Philip Morris International on Thursday said it would be filing a premarket tobacco product application (PMTA) in the United States for its
IQOS ILUMA product in October.

The company at its investor day said that while the PMTA timeline remains
“hard to predict”, it expects the launch of the ILUMA heated tobacco units towards
the second half of its three-year forecast period of 2024
to 2026.

IQOS heats up packets of ground tobacco but does not burn them, a process the company says potentially results in fewer
health risks than traditional smoking

A PMTA is required to sell new tobacco products in the United States, with manufacturers required to provide scientific data demonstrating a
product is appropriate for the protection of public health.

Bug-bitten oolong? The secret behind Taiwan’s rare honey-flavored tea — and where to enjoy it Ethena As the leaves rustle atop the hills in Nantou Taiwan’s largest tea-producing area the farm suddenly comes alive millions of tiny green bugs hopping into the air. While many farmers might frown at the sight of these pests munching on their crops Lee Ming-cheng a third-generation tea farmer and maker can’t hide the broad smile on his sun-kissed face. This “green insect fog” as locals call it is a sign they’ll have a good harvest of Gui Fei Oolong also known as Honey Flavor Dong Ding Oolong or Concubine Oolong a special tea that’s prized for offering a hint of honey flavor. And it’s these endemic insects called Jacobiasca formosana or tea jassids that are to thank for it. When the jassids feed the leaves go into defensive mode and produce a sweetened hormone that tastes and smells like honey creating one of the world’s most intriguing teas: mixiang cha or honey-fragrance tea. The bug-bitten leaves are oxidized and roasted to create a variety of beverages. There’s mixiang black tea made with fully oxidized leaves and oolong teas like Oriental Beauty partially oxidized and not roasted and the previously mentioned Concubine Tea partially oxidized and roasted to name a few. Unlike Taiwan’s ubiquitous bubble tea mixiang tea is still highly limited and largely off-the-radar. But what was once a hidden gem among serious tea lovers is now starting to gain international attention.

LONDON, Sept 28 (Reuters) – Philip Morris International (PMI) on Thursday unveiled a zero-tobacco stick for use with its “heat-not-burn”
device IQOS, which may help the company avoid tax and other regulations that affect its tobacco products in some markets.

IQOS heats up small packets of ground up tobacco resembling cigarettes but does
not burn them, a process the company says potentially results in fewer health risks compared to smoking.

Now, PMI has developed a range of sticks, which it calls
LEVIA, that do not contain tobacco but a “non-tobacco substrate” infused with nicotine, with flavours including tobacco, menthol with blueberry and peppermint.

Chief Executive Officer Jacek Olczak said during an investor day presentation that
as well as offering another alternative to consumers who may not wish to use tobacco, the product may avoid the
heavy taxes or other controls imposed on its other products.

LEVIA “may not be subject to flavour regulations in some jurisdictions” and “doesn’t fit” in existing fiscal categories, Olczak continued, adding PMI was in discussions with regulators in some
target markets on how they would approach it.

The company advocates for lower taxes for products referred to by the
industry as “reduced risk” compared to traditional cigarettes.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has authorised PMI to market IQOS as offering reduced exposure to harmful chemicals versus smoking, though the World Health Organisation says
there is currently no evidence that heated tobacco
has lower health risks than other tobacco products.

A PMI spokesman declined to provide additional details on when and where LEVIA could launch, or what substance replaces the tobacco.

Some niche companies have developed heat sticks made from tea leaves instead of tobacco, which they sell for use with major players’ “heat-not-burn” technology – a headache for big companies that want
only their own sticks to be compatible with their devices.

‘A short and significant relationship’: How a piano in a pickup builds connections
Metamask

Dozens of internationally renowned recording artists give concerts in Vegas every year, but the musician who connects best with people might be a local troubadour who improvises on a piano in the back of his pickup.

The maestro, Danny Kean, calls his setup The Traveling Piano, and he has traversed North America sharing music for nearly 20 years.

Kean’s home base is Las Vegas now, and every time he plays, he invites passersby to climb aboard the truck and tickle the ivory for themselves. Even if people are shy or say they can’t do it, Kean usually convinces them to give it a try, inspiring total strangers to express themselves through the common language of music.

He estimates more than 100,000 people have played his piano since 2006.

For most of these impromptu virtuosos, the experience is cathartic — many of them step down from the truck in tears. For Kean, 69, the encounters nourish his soul.

“I enjoy sharing my music with others, but I enjoy having others share theirs with me just as much,” he said. “My goal is to connect with others by creating a short and significant relationship. Music is a great facilitator for that in every way and on every level.”

Kean does not accept fees or tips for these musical awakenings, giving away time and energy for nothing in return. He practices philanthropy in other ways, too, providing food and other necessities for the burgeoning population of unhoused individuals in downtown Las Vegas and around the Las Vegas Valley.

“I love the idea of strangers becoming less afraid of each other,” he said. “This love for humanity drives me to keep doing good.”

In China, people are hiring ‘climbing buddies’ for big money. The more attractive they are, the higher the price
??? ????? ??????-?????? ? ???????
Wendy Chen decided to challenge herself by climbing Mount Tai, a well-known mountain in eastern China.

But there was one obstacle in her way: she couldn’t find a friend to join her for the five-hour trek.

Rather than forgo her plans, the 25-year-old hired a “climbing buddy,” a young man with extensive outdoor experience, to accompany and support her to the 5,000-foot peak.

Known in Chinese as “pei pa” (meaning “accompany to climb”), these are young Chinese men who join strangers on their journeys up popular mountains for a price. The trend has gained momentum this year, as hashtags related to “climbing buddy” have had over 100 million views on Chinese social media.

Young, athletic individuals, often university students or even military veterans, advertise themselves on social media platforms like Xiaohongshu and Douyin, with profiles featuring their height, fitness level and hiking experience. They usually charge between 200 to 600 yuan ($30 to $85) per trip.

During the climb, these “buddies” will do anything to distract their clients from feeling exhausted and push them to keep going: from singing, telling jokes, playing music, verbal encouragement, going so far as carrying their bags, holding their hands, and pulling them.
A day on the mountain
Chen and her climbing buddy’s adventure began at around 8:00 pm so she could arrive at the peak in time for the famous sunrise. After assessing her fitness level, her climbing buddy planned a moderate route and carried her backpack the whole way.

When they faced chilling winds at the peak, Chen’s climbing buddy rented a thick coat for her while directing her to a walled shelter.

At the moment the sun rose, Chen’s climbing buddy was already prepared with a national flag and other props so that she could take a memorable photo. Though she felt his photography skills still had room to improve, she rated her climbing buddy as “satisfactory.” The service cost her 350 yuan ($49).

Though Chen paid a typical price for a climbing buddy, she acknowledges that more good-looking buddies can command higher rates.

“Attractiveness is also part of their strength,” she says.

Climbing buddies’ main customers tend to be single young women, but that’s slowly changing.
